Man Kicks, Bites Woman During Long Island Robbery: Police

A man was taken into custody after he robbed a Long Island woman of her Macbook laptop and iPhone, kicking and biting her in the process, police said.

Devon Mertzel, age 24, was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 26 for robbing a woman at a Long Island apartment complex, kicking, hitting, and biting her in the process, police said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in East Garden City, according to the Nassau County Police.

It was just before 4 p.m. when 24-year-old Devon Mertzel got into a verbal argument with a 20-year-old woman, who has remained unnamed, at the Avalon Apartment Complex, located at 604 Mitchel Field Way.

The altercation eventually turned physical, and Mertzel allegedly took the woman’s iPhone and Macbook from her forcefully.

Police then said Mertzel began to assault the woman.

He kicked her in the stomach, bit her left hand, and hit her in the face with the back of his hand.

When he was arrested, police also found and recovered an unloaded handgun in plain sight.

The woman suffered lacerations, pain, and bruising, for which she was treated at the scene.

It is unclear what Mertzel’s relationship with the victim is. Police did not provide information regarding if Mertzel is a resident of East Garden City.

Mertzel was charged with robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is next due in First District Court on Friday, Oct. 13.
